Leadership momentum starts with the next decision

One of the fastest ways teams lose energy is when work feels stalled. People are busy, meetings are happening, conversations are happening, but nothing seems to move forward. And when progress feels slow or uncertain, energy drains quickly.  This is where leadership momentum matters far more than motivation.

Create forward motion

Many leaders assume that when energy drops, they need to encourage people more. Offer reassurance. Say something inspiring. But encouragement without movement does very little. What people actually need is a sense that things are advancing, even imperfectly.  Leadership momentum is about creating forward motion, not flawless plans.

Here’s what often gets in the way. Leaders delay decisions, wait for more information, or try to protect their team from uncertainty by holding things back until everything is clear. The intention is good. The impact is not. When direction is vague or decisions are deferred, people feel stuck. And stuck teams do not sustain energy.

Why stalled decisions drain energy

Leaders who are effective at leadership momentum do something different. They make progress visible, even when answers are incomplete. They create movement by clarifying the next step, not the entire path.

So here’s the action I’d like you to take.  Think about one issue, project, or decision that has been lingering on your team longer than it should. Ask yourself this question: “What is the smallest decision I could make right now that would move this forward?”

Not the perfect decision. Not the final decision. Just the next one.  Then make it. Name it. Communicate it clearly. And let your team know when you will reassess.

Creating momentum through small decisions

This does two important things. First, it restores leadership momentum, which immediately boosts energy. Second, it signals that progress matters more than perfection. People feel less anxious when they know movement is happening, even if adjustments will come later.

Here’s my challenge to you. This week, identify one stalled area of work and create forward motion with a clear next decision. Watch how quickly energy shifts when people feel things are moving again.

And I would love to hear from you. Where have you seen a small, timely decision restore leadership momentum on your team, or where has the absence of one caused work to stall? Share your experience by adding a comment directly on the blog so we can all learn from it.

If decision hesitation is something you struggle with, I’ve written about decision-making under uncertainty in one of my regular columns in The Globe and Mail.  You can find it here: Navigating ambiguity: Five steps for how to lead when the path is unclear
