Earlier this week, I started a dialogue once again about what it takes to tap into and capitalize on the creativity, adaptability, and technology-smarts of the Millennial generation. I said that it was important to give them structure by clearly stating your expectations for results. But here’s another key thing to remember.
Once you’ve given them the structure they need, then it’s just as important to give them what they need to get the job done! I mean, think about this for a moment. You wouldn’t ask a construction worker to dig a foundation for a building by handing him a shovel! You’d most likely ensure that he had access to at least a backhoe. In the same way, it’s just as important in any environment to give your employees the tools they need to get the job done. Even more important if you’re dealing with a tech-savvy Millennial. If your Millennial is walking around with more technology in her backpack than she has while sitting at her desk in your office, then you have a major disconnect! Even worse, if your Millennial can build a new website on GoDaddy in half a day, but it takes you five days to get him a username and a password, don’t be surprised if you lose him, at least mentally if not physically! Give your Millennials the tools they need to get the job done!
Thoughts? Would love your insights, whether you’re working with Millennials or you are one!
